Week 7 Question

I've enjoyed reading your entries for week 5. Some of your responses were quite surprising (in a good way). This would be one of the reasons why I like to do this blog: it's fun to learn new things about students one would never learn in class.

On to this week's question......The fact that you've got mid-terms next week is something I'm sure you're all aware of. Good luck to all of you.

This week's question pertains to what you do when you've got a stressful week of studying ahead (like mid-terms). To be exact, what specific studying strategies do you employ when you have a big test or even multiple tests coming up? What do you do to stay focused, motivated, and consistently engaged in your studies?

  1. Hi Josh,
Having read this week's question, I suddenly felt that big tests were something that far from me. Because I had many impotant tests when I was in the high school, now, I have graduated for several months.
If I have a big test, I'd like to begin to prepare for it 4days ago. Moreover, I enjoy studying after dinner because I have nothing to worry about during that time.
At the first night, I'll read my textbook. I believe that the information in the textbook is the most basic, so I will skim the whole information first. After that, I'll choose some difficult or important points to do some intensive readings.
I prefer reviewing all of the handouts at the second night. I'll answer the questions again that I did wrongly before to make sure I have understood them.
At the third night, it's time to review my notess. There are lots of outlines and special examples in my notebook. They are still very important for my test I think. I cannot overlook.
I will review my textbook again at the last day. I have to know more details about each point. Then, I'd like to think about those points without books. It is a good way to check if I have remembered.
Although I have prepared for a long time for the coming test, I usually feel a little nervous. I think it is not bad maybe.

  2. Hi.

Organizing my memos is my strategy. Before tests,I usually organize many types of information into my note book. During class,I always write them down fast. Therefore,my memos are so messy and disorganized. Before each test, I organize my notes to re-learn the days class contents. However,I don't have to force myself to do this work because I always memorize some by writing. In addition,I know I need to write. In other words,I can't concentrate without writing. I often fail to memorize when I try to memorize by reading or speaking. Thus,I like to memorize by writing, even though my friends recommend other ways. They says to me "Writing takes a long time! Don't you save your time?". I know what they want to say,and I want to save my time. Unfortunately,I still love to memorize by writing, and this is my strategy.

Although I like memorizing by writing, sometimes it doesn't affect me. I mean,I can't concentrate at times.

I do other kinds of things if writing does not work on studying. As soon as I feel that I can't focus on studying,I stop studying. Then, I read books, watch TV or take a nap. After doing that,I go back to study.

  3. Hi Josh and everyone in class.
This is my strategies to study for exam.

First, I usually review almost questions that I dealed with during class time. When I stuied and answered questions in the class, I would be confused because I'm a type of person who takes a lot of times to solve any problems. However, due to reviwing things I learned in the class, I can understand what I learnd and what is important.
Although I review what I learnd, sometime I can't understand and have qestions. Then, I want my teacher and friends to help me, and actually, they can lead me to good explanations or solutions, so it's important for me to not only review by myself but also ask questions.
Finally,I drill and drill to memorize and understand more and more. In addition, whenever I drill, I always read textbook and vocablary words with voice and write words and idioms again and again. It's really available way to improve my English skill because I can memorize with both vision and hearing.
Thus I spend my time studying for exams, however, I need to take a break for my powers of concentration, so I organize my schdules and decide time to take a rest. I think to take a rest can help me concentrate more and more. Furthermore, I'm proud of that I know the best way to study for exams.

    Thank you.

  4. Hello Josh and everyone!

This is great question because I want to know about other good study chips to learn English for my classmates. It may helpful for me to study English effectively. In my opinion, I have 2 methods for studying before quizzes or tests.

First method for study for the big test, I often make a summary note. Before some quizzes, I studied the section like grammar and made a summary note about lecture. For example, I rewrite the important things in my note through reading textbooks and notebooks in class. The reason why I make a summary is because I can understand well after making a summary. Also, I can review quickly using the summary note before the big test.

I have study methods not only making summary but also drawing a picture or diagram. This is big part for my understanding the lecture well. For example, when I study the tense in grammar class, it’s difficult to understand the connection between one action and another one using words. I easily to translate in Japanese and think in Japanese; however, translation is not good for us to understand the English grammar. In addition, I like drawing picture, so I can study through having fun!

In these ways, making summary and drawing pictures or diagrams are good method for me to study before the quizzes or tests. If someone is interested in my study tips, I will recommend my methods.

    Thank you very much.

  6. Hi, everyone!
"Exam", "Quiz", and "Test" are the dislike of my life. However, I'm a student, so I have to study for them.
When I've got a stressful week of studying ahead, I'm going to check the test review, and then I will think about my schedule. For example, I have to check 10pages on Monday, I'll solve 5 problems on Tuesday, and I'll construct a review on Wednesday, so I can notice how much time I have and how much I have to study.
When I check all of the pages, I know what I cannot understand, and I will go to an office hour. After I can understand everything, I will check them many times. If the exam is for only memorization, I will write many times because memorization is the most difficult thing for me. If the exam is like the next grammar exam, I will solve many problems. I think the most important thing is how many times I can review.
This is the way I study.

  7. Hi everyone.

I took a lot of test like an entrance exam, TOEFL, term examination, and so on. Whenever I faced with such tests, I studied for tests using some strategies. There are three steps I employ when I have a big test or even multiple tests: the confirmation what I should do, the set of a schedule, and repeat 3 times.

The first step what should I do before the test is the confirmation what I should do. I need to know the range of the test and what I should do. Checking the range of the test may advise me that how I should study. If I know the range of the test, I can see daylight. After doing this, I check what I should do. This action connects with next step.

The next step what should I do before the test is the set of a schedule. In previous step, I checked what I should do. Then, I make a schedule. This schedule shows what I should do this day. It is easy to know what I do because of this schedule.

After that, I repeat what I should do in the range of the test.3 times. The expert about brain said that it was a good process to repeat 3 times. And he also said that it was difficult to remember if you study only once. Therefore, I repeat what I want to remember 3 times.

When I face with the tests, I do these steps: the confirmation what I should do, the set of a schedule, and repeat 3 times. I will use these steps and approach with this mid-term tests.

  8. Hi

Quizes or exams are always make me crazy, but before taking some tests, I review my notes usually and study some points which I'm not good at or I don't really understand. When I study for tests, I always took long time review everything that I learn. Therefore, it is easy to lose my power of concentration during studying for tests. Because of this, I always try to set time for study and make myself easy to concentrate on studying. For example, after finishing studying for an hour, I will have break. Then, I continue same things to keep myself concentrate on studying. After I started to try this, my score were getting better. Therefore, my strategy is to make myself concentrate on studying for setting both study time and break time.
