Final Question

Well folks, this is it. The final blog entry.
Most of you have done a great job of responding to our weekly questions, and I've really enjoyed reading your responses.

For our final entry, I'd like you to discuss the class. More specifically, what do you think you can take away from our 15 or so weeks together? You might discuss something that has to with writing, or you could maybe talk about something having to do grammar. Maybe you feel that you are taking away something completely unrelated to both writing and grammar. If you don't think you can take away anything from the class, what do you wish you could have improved?

As a follow-up question, what do you wish we could have covered in this class that we didn't do?

Please be honest, as this is simply a truthful reflection on our time together during the 2010 fall semester.

Thanks for writing!

Josh

  1. Hello Josh and everyone!

I am surprised the time flies so quickly. Is it really last blog?
I spent hard time for overcoming homesick or a lot of homework for the first time...
However, I enjoyed a lot in class. I love my class and all of you guys! In the last blog, I do not want to be procrastinator!!

Today, I was making my summary note for Writing and Grammar class. Then, I recalled the first day when I came here. I was really nervous, and I had a lot of concerns about my life; however, it was wonderful time for me thanks to class 5B.
I learned how to write essay through writing many drafts; for example, we learned narrative essay, compare contrast essay, process essay, cause effect essay, and research paper. I feel confidence for my writing skills compare to before. Speaking of grammar, in addition, I learned a lot of things, such as, tense, transitions, conjunctions, noun clause, adverb clause, adjective clause, and so on. Thanks to the grammar lecture, my score of TOEFL become better than before!! Then, I realized the enormity of this class!

If this class can add something, in my opinion, I wanted to learn the subjunctive mood in grammar section. I always confuse the tense for subjunctive mood. Moreover, I want to do something for making our memory with classmates. For instance, we can make short movie? This is just one example.

I love this class, and I do not want to forget about this life with my classmates 5B! I am really glad to spend great time with you guys! Thank you very much,

    Mai Negishi

  2. HI,

First of all, I would like to say thanks for everyone who studied with me and taught me a lot of things.

I can not believe that this is the last blog.In addition, I am surprised becuase finals week is almost here. This semester is the last semester for me, so I am really sad and I want to continue studying here more and more.

I could study English Grammar and Writing throughout this class a lot. For example, I did not like the noun clause and adjunctive clause because they confused me. However, when I studied about that, I thought I could understand that. Also, I wrote many essays, so I could learn writing skills as well. It made me feel more confident in my skills.
If we had more time, I would study about more grammar skills, such as anastrophe.

In addition, I was encouraged from you guys because everyone studied hard, so I was stimulated to progress further in my studies.

Thank you, and thanks ELI too. I really enjoyed everything.

Do not forget about me after I leave for Japan!haha

  3. Hi.

Same as Mai and Azusa,I appreciate helping me, and studying with me.I learned a lot of things from my classmates.I really like 5B class!

Actually,I hadn't studied the contents which we did in class. Almost of all things were new things to me,so I can take away all of the stuffs we learned. It is difficult to choose specific thing which has special meaning to me from writing section beause I believe that all things are equally important. Concering grammar section,I think studying about clauses especially helped me.After I learned about clauses,my expression had more variety.I can use clauses which state contrast, sequence, cause, purpose and concession. Also,I could get better score on TOEFL:I could felt that my point of view had changed. In addtion,I got unexpected advantage--my reading skill became better because I could understand sentence structure. These are the things which I learned from Josh; however, I learned a lot of things from my classmates, too.Everyone's questions helped me to understand more clearly and deeply. Also,I leaned many different point of view by exchanging opinions. Thus,I learned many things through this class. Moreover, my English skills improved.

    Thank you so much!

  4. First, I think I could get the various skills of writing. At the beginning of this semester, I really don't like writing paper in English and not good at writing. I couldn't organize my idea and didn't know the good and effective methods to write paper, but I learned the kinds and methods about writing. Also, I wrote five kinds of essays in this class, so I could improve writing at all.

In addition, I didn't thoroughly understand and memorize grammar, even though I had studied for a long time when I was high school student. I think grammar is the most important part not only in TOEFL but also in essay, so it was enough worthy to review many useful grammar part.

That I wanted to do more in this class is discussion and shoring information about our countries. We are from each different countries and we sometime wrote essay about our countries or culture. I think it was really good opportunity to share our differences, however, we had less time to discuss or talk about our cultural differences. Moreover, I tried to read our classmates' essays because I think they could be good role model to improve our writing skill.

At last, I think we fortunately spent pretty precious time to not only study but also be friends with all of us. I'm really happy to meet up, so although it's time to say good-bye I want to keep on our special relationship each other. I really appreciate and am proud of studying together in this class. Thank you so much!

  5. Hi Josh,
Time flys so quickly that I can't believe it is final week now.

This class is my favourite although I don't like writing at all. For the reason that I can see my own improvement during this semester. Last week, when I saw my first in-class essay, I almost wanted to laugh because the orgnization was terrible. Actually, I didn't know English writing also has so many stuff need learning before I took this clss. You always correct our essays carefully. I am really impressed by your patience because my teachers in China never do so. Sometimes, there are lots of errors in my essay, but you still give me high score. It makes me feel more confident and encouraged. I think the writing process: topic -> brainstorm -> thesis -> outline -> draft#1 is quiet helpful for me. And I form the habit to follow the process before I write a whole essay. For the grammar part, in fact, I had learned all of the grammar in my high school, but I forgot part of them. This class reminds me of them. I know explaining grammar is not easy. My teachers before always said," it's just a rule, no reason. Remember it ." But you explain the grammar so logically that we can understand easily.

Pesonally, the only thing that need to be improved is there are few quizs. I need quizs to test my knowledge and promote myself to study harder.

Also, I make some good friends who are from other countries through the class. I am very happy because I didn't expect it.

In a word, I enjoy the class very much. Thank you Josh. We all think you are a nice teacher.

  7. I forgot to write what I wanted to do in class. I wanted to do smaller grammar quizes, even though it can be difficult for us to manage our time. I sometime mixed up two or three contents,so I was confused.More specifically, I wanted to do small quiz before we took final exam because adjective clause section was tough for me. Quizes can help us to understand. It clearly shows us what are our weak points, and what we misunderstood. Therefore,I wanted to do more small quizes.
