Week 11 Question

Hi folks!

I hope you enjoyed the Halloween weekend. I hope you equally enjoy your day off tomorrow.

Next week we will take a short field trip to a local high school. During this visit, you will have the opportunity to meet and talk to American high school students. We will also use this visit as a way to generate ideas for our third essay, which will be a cause-effect essay about some issue related to American high school students.

As a prelude to this trip, I'd like for you to discuss your impressions of American high school students. More specifically, I'd like you to explain what stereotypes you have about high school students in the U.S. (your assumptions about what you think American high school students are like). These stereotypes can be based on movies, TV shows, pop music, hearsay (what you've heard other people say), or personal experience.

Please respond to this question by no later than Sunday, Nov. 7th.

As always, thank you for your responses.

I think everything is as it was in our old school, I have friends in high school that I say it is not so different as may old school.just that the language and traditions are a little different. we do not have sports like futboll, the music is the same and classes.
but they are different in the language.

  2. Hi, Josh,
Because one of my cousin is a high school student in NJ, I called her just now. She had told me about her classmates for a while. According to her, there are four types of American high school students.
The first type is the most polular in the school. They are usually really good at their studies. However, they don’t have to pay much attention to the studies and always get excellent grades in the tests. Therefore, they have more free time to attend the parties. My cousin, for example, is a representative of this thpe of high school students. She learns new skills easily and quickly. Of course, it is common for her to join parties and have fun with friends. I really admire her.
The second group of American high school students is similar with the first one. They are smart enough, but they don’t show any interest in the parties. If they feel boring, reading books or listening to the music will be their choices. They are low-key (me too).
Students in type three is also a common group in American high schools. They are able to get high scores in the tests as well, but they seldom talk with others, including their teachers and classmates. They’d like to do things by themselves, so the other students don’t like to play with them.
The rest students are divided into the fourth group. As we known, not all of the students can do well in studies. The rest group’s students don’t show any outstanding intelligience in the studies. In addition, they love strange music which are not accepted by majority of people. As a result, they don’t have friends. Oh, sounds bad.
In short, that is just what I heard from my cousin. I am looking forward to meeting the high school students. I think they are more creative than Chinese high school students (me) because of such a free surrounding.

  3. Hello Josh and everyone,

I have stereotype about American high school students. This stereotype may come from American movies, and also the high school which I went to in New Zealand. Please forgive me if I write strange things because it’s just my image.
First, I think most students may not study in class or at home at all. I think their priority is hanging out with their friends, belonging to some clubs, and joining some school events.
Also, I believe every student like making so many jokes. When I saw some movies about high school students, I really wanted to go to American high school. It seems very fun!! However, American high school system is like university. Students have many choices for classes, it includes freedom for students. On the other hand, we have same classmate members for a whole year in Japan. I liked my classes so much in my high school, Japan.
In American high school, moreover, there are some heroes or stars in school, and then many students become fun of the heroes and stars in school. Also, I saw a lot of fighting scene in movies. I think many of the students may aggressive?
This is my stereotype about American high school students. I am really looking forward to going field trip at high school.

    thank you,

  4. Hi

My impression on high school and high school in America is like High School Musical made by Disney! I watched this TV shows and movie when I was in Japan. I noticed that it is not very popular in America, but it is very famous and popular in Japan. Therefore, many people in Japan likes this movie, and most of them think that is high school and high school students in America. According this TV shows, my image of high school students are very cheerful and enjoyable. Their high school life looks very active and, they are interested in many things. It could be a good things and bad things. For example, my stereotype about high school students is that their everyday life in high school such as relationship among friends, dating with someone, smoking cigarette or using drug. All of those images came from TVs, movies and stories that I heard from my friends. Therefore, I don't know this is true or not. After I watched that movie, High School Musical, I felt high school systems or students is very different from my country, and I liked it so much!! So that I was very shocked when I heard from some of my American friends that most of Americans don't like that movie. However, this is my stereotype about high school and high school students in America, and I hope I can find out truth from talking with real high school students on Tuesday!!

    Yui

  5. Hi,
    I'm sorry to late.
I have stereotypes about American high school students. I don't know about real high school students. However, my image is exactly same as yui. Japanese students love high school musical. when I was a high school student, I really wanted to go to American high school because it sounded so much fun. I think American high school students wear cute cloths, played many sports, and fall in love someone! Last one is really big point because in TV show or magazines, many young students talk about it.
Therefore, my image of American high school students is that they enjoy everyday.
I'm so excited to talk with them. Hope I can notice real life about them.

  6. Hi Josh and everyone in class.

I have a stereotype for American high school students which they enjoy parties for every big events. When I was a high school student, I usually would watch "High School Musical". I really like this program and this program made me interested in America, so I'm still impressed some images from this program. In addition, when I was in Japan, I really like Lindsay Lohan so I've watched movie "Mean Girls". In other word, "Mean Girls" also made me really strong stereotype of American high school.
People in these movies were pretty excited to hold party. For example, in the movie "Mean Girls", students usually enjoy holding home party and sometime they drink alcohol. During party, there is really noisy music and pizza. I think students in America are not so fashionable during classes, but when they have a party, they really dress up. Moreover, students often have their own cars so they come to party by a car. It is also unfamiliar and my stereotype for high school students in America.
Since I came here, I've touched some of my stereotypes. However, what I touched is only part of America, so I want to know a real America behavior more and more.

    Thank you.

  8. Hi.
I like watching movies and TV shows, so I got some images of American high school students from them.

My first image comes from High School Musical. There was a pretty girl, and she was dominant. Also, there was a handsome boy. Actually, many movies about high school have characters like them. Therefore, I think there are students like prince and princess in American high school.

My second image comes from the OC. Boys and girls like to hang out. It's not a bad behavior. However, some bad behavior were depicted in this show. They drank alchol and smoked. In addition, they had many problems. Bad behavior and complicated problems are second image of American high school students.

Third image of high school student are diligent. American university students study harder than Japanese university students, so I guess American high school students also study hard. Moreover, the U.S. has many prestigious universties like Harvard University. Because of these two reasons, my third image of American high school students is diligent.

Thus, I have good images and bad images of American high shool students.
